Abstract

overarching goals for the Ethical Tech Initiative have been to undertake activities in two broad areas. First, we have focused on two problems involving digital technology: mis- and disinformation on social media, and bias in predictive algorithms and artificial intelligence. Second, we have focused on how to use technology to serve underserved populations and to engage those populations to ensure that we provide those services in a manner that is appropriate and effective. We dedicate one section of Part I to activities in each of those two broad substantive areas. While working in those two areas, we have also pursued the objectives of (1) ensuring that students are involved in our activities at all levels so as to nurture interest and experience in public interest technology in the next generation; (2) engaging in interdisciplinary research and dialogue; and (3) providing resources that will be available to the public. In the third section of Part I, we outline our successes in meeting those objectives, which are distributed among all of the activities in which we have engaged.
