Abstract
Report on the project to pilot an institutional framework (originally called the CDS Impact Collectives but subsequently renamed a co-Lab) for interdisciplinary collaborations involving faculty, students, and external partners around courses and summer programs leading to student placements in PIT careers.
Our pilot involved a collaboration between BU’s Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences and BU’s Department of Journalism based at the College of Communications (COM) focused on justice-focused computational journalism curricular and co-curricular programming. At the highest level, our pilot was a monumental success. The Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences (CDS) is a brand-new academic unit, accepting its first class of undergraduates in Fall 2021. CDS is meant to serve as a bridge, providing a foundation for supporting interdisciplinary degree programs in computing and data science for BU’s 17 schools and colleges. The collaboration with the College of Communication’s Department of Journalism was the first example of how this goal could be achieved. As a result of this pilot, we have a proof of concept that made it possible to have conversations with several other departments including BU’s College of Education and Human Development.
The leaders of the two academic units involved in this pilot are engaged in discussions about how the collaboration can be expanded including joint faculty hires and degree programs, both of which would significantly deepen BU’s capacity to educate students about computing and data
science skills tailored for public interest careers in journalism and communications.
The stories published because of the collaboration with media partners have garnered significant publicity for Boston University and the students whose bylines and contributions have been featured in the stories published by our media partners.
