Abstract
Digital Forensics is the study of examining digital data to detect and analyze digital evidence. It is commonly used in legal investigations and corporate compliance procedures where evidence is stored on computers or digital storage devices. This course provides students with instruction and hands-on laboratory experience applying practical solutions to complex computer forensics case studies. The course consists of 12 lessons with corresponding lab activities and written homework assignments. Upon successful completion, students will be able to:
● Explore various career opportunities for digital forensic examiners.
● Define and identify several types of cyber crimes, including identity theft.
● Define subpoenas, search warrants, and other jurisprudence terms.
● Understand laws affecting digital forensic examinations and technicians.
● Identify various sources of electronic information for computer forensic examiners.
● Prepare evidence and document seizure by studying various case studies.
● Gather and document evidence using chain of custody formats.
● Develop investigative thinking and awareness.
● Examine various data hiding techniques.
● Define encryption and hashing terminology and techniques.
● Compare and contrast electronic password cracking and password recovery tools.
