Abstract

Career coaches like nothing more than helping others, so it's troubling when clients disappear after the first session. Chopra discusses methods she uses to target her clients needs while avoiding the pitfalls of personalizing the interaction, providing tips for successful interactions between career coaches and their students, and ice breakers that help create a connection between the career coaches and the students they serve helping students to be more comfortable in coming back. Chopra also addresses the additional challenge of engaging clients when working with them from a distance. Karen James Chopra delivered this professional development webinar on September 30, 2013 to Consortium for Healthcare Education Online (CHEO) career coaches. Karen James Chopra, LPC, MCC, NCC is a career counselor and therapist with 14 years experience in private practice in Washington D.C. Her business depends on attracting and keeping clients, so she has devoted much thought and attention to the particular challenge of the intake process. Her clients come to her for help in three main areas: career exploration, job search and career management. In addition to her work with clients, she has a small consulting practice for career professionals, where she provides training and individual consultation services, especially for counselors and coaches looking to start or expand a private practice. She developed the Integrative Career Counseling (ICC) model to provide a framework for incorporating mental health approaches into career counseling. Prior to getting her masters in Community Counseling, she spent more than a decade working on trade negotiations for the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. That experience helped inform the first book she wrote: Coaching Career Clients through Salary and Other Workplace Negotiations. She is a regular presenter at regional and national conferences, particularly the National Career Development Association's annual conference. She was honored in 2013 as the "Outstanding Career Professional" by the Maryland Career Development Association.
