Abstract
In collaboration with Stanford University Open Learning Initiative (OLI) and the Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST), Bellevue College and St. Louis Community College developed a year-long, online Health Information Technology Foundations course. The content aligns with the HIMSS CAHIMS (Certified Associate in Healthcare Information & Management Systems) industry certification. The course is designed to provide both a solid foundation in health IT concepts and preparation for the certification exam.
The course includes ~100 hours of seat time, equivalent to 6 semester credits or 10 quarter credits. This course was the result of more than 20,000 hours of development effort.
These top-of-the line instructional materials include: 1. Evidence-based instruction; 2. Scenarios; 3. Hundreds of interactive activities; 4. Fully accessible and 508-compliant content; 5. Rich visuals including videos; 6. Assessment questions designed in concert with Stanford University assessment experts; 7. Platform that provides detailed metrics on learner progress.
How these materials can be used: a) Faculty can send students directly to the OLI site to complete the entire course or selected units, modules, or pages (at no cost); b) Faculty can Integrate part or all of the course into their own institution's Learning Management System (free until May, 2016; $25/student thereafter); c) Individuals can complete the course independently.
