Abstract

Three courses were developed to assist with student success. The Computer Competency Boot Camp prepared students for the Medical Office Receptionist certificate with information about computer hardware and software, knowledge in basic computer terminology, and developing skills in basic computer operations. Students also developed and/or worked toward the improvement of keyboarding skills to increase efficiency when keying information into the computer. The contextualized Written Communications courses helped students develop writing skills including prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing. The course was adapted for Medical Office Receptionist students to transition to the Medical Assistant Program. The Study Skills and Test Taking Boot Camp provided students with strategies to assist them in successfully completing healthcare and general education coursework. Students learned specific strategies for study skills and test taking and applied them to medical course content. Students developed a variety of strategies for success in post-secondary studies, including goal setting, time management, creating an effective study environment, and identifying personal learning style(s).
