Abstract
Reading Writing and Reasoning, RWR090, is a 5-credit integrated developmental reading and writing course developed at Northern Essex Community College as an accelerated learning option for students placing into any developmental reading level and Basic Writing, the higher of two developmental writing courses. Students who complete the course with a grade of C or higher are exempt from further reading courses and are eligible to take English Composition I, ENG101. This course is based upon the accelerated learning model at Chabot Community College and Middlesex Community College. We believe that what “developmental” or under-prepared students need to be ready for college is practice and guidance in the same kinds of reading, thinking and writing that a good college-level course requires, with more guidance and support.
