Abstract

We’ve developed a web-based tool that supports an ELL learning dictionary across basic medical terminology. It’s designed for our language needs at Western, but there’s no reason other colleges couldn’t build off the initial work here and add other languages. The program, named EMILE for ELL Medical Terminology Interactive Lexicon for Education can be used for a variety of purposes, but is primarily a learning tool. An ELL student taking Med Term can use the tool as a tutorial for learning medical terminology in English through the translator in their language. Western believes this will be especially useful for English Language Learners who struggle with pronunciation of the term, rather than more serious language issues. English-speaking students who find themselves working in a second-language speaking region could likewise use the tool (it’s designed to be accessed through mobile devices as well) as a quick aid in working with patients in Spanish or Hmong.
