Abstract

This NANSLO lab activity is self-contained and can be used in general chemistry and survey of chemistry courses. In this activity, the effects of dissolved materials on the freezing point of the solvent are explored. The lab activity includes background information on colligative properties and how to calculate the relationship between freezing point and the amount of dissolved solute using equations provided, and practical applications of freezing point depression. The lab activity includes information on estimating error, pre-lab questions, a lab exercise, and post-lab analysis activities.
