Abstract

This project proposes tools and methods enabling underserved communities to apply design thinking in pursuit of solving problems. We will prioritize the needs of the Westside Neighborhood English Avenue community by developing frameworks that support building social capital for the neighborhood. We cannot have a conversation about development without also considering gentrification; progress should not mean displacement. Our proposal approaches the Westside as a socio-technical system. While the potential for technology to produce more sustainable, equitable, and resilient cities is real, this issue cannot be solved by technology alone. Our aim is to introduce technology as a powerful tool that swings the needle in a positive direction by drawing upon the needs of the community, leveraged with specific knowledge about the context.
