Abstract

Florida XCEL-IT will expand efforts by community colleges to use non-credit courses that are more accessible, to quickly train participants and start them on their career pathway. The developmental education MOOC will be one of the non-credit courses. A large portion of the target population for Florida XCEL-IT lack the knowledge for college level learning in reading, English or math. The MOOC will address this deficiency. Elements of this college readiness or “Dev Ed” MOOC will consist of an enrollment page to capture data on users for evaluation purposes, a pre-test, 24 topic modules and quizzes covering 70 state educational competencies, 180 primary learning activities, 90 optional learning activities, a closing test, and links to follow-up activities. As the name implies, the expected impact is to involve a much larger number of people in a learning and review process than might otherwise not be possible. MOOCs also offer the possibility that a “learning community” effect could emerge as many people get involved and start to chat online or at the local coffee shop about their experiences hopes and/or anxieties about signing up for more college level learning. Ultimately, the spirit of MOOCs is that everyone is a student and everyone is a teacher: a concept that fits well in the rural context of neighbors helping neighbors.
