Abstract
The proposed project will address an emergent need to engage the public on science and technology policy issues by developing the next generation of science engagement professionals who can work collaboratively with local civic, government and university partners to convene community dialogues on Public Interest Technology (PIT) topics. An immersive, scalable, and replicable training curriculum and fellowship program will be piloted at informal science education (ISE) centers in PIT-UN cities. Five 2-person teams of Community Innovation (CI) fellows will be competitively selected and assigned a subject matter expert.
Project Principals and subject matter experts will mentor and guide the CI teams as they design, develop and convene a public forum on a locally relevant PIT issue. CI teams will use participatory technology assessment (pTA) and expert-stakeholder interview methodologies (modified National Science Foundation I-Corps curriculum) to develop the forum design and result dissemination strategies. Project Principals will evaluate and assess the training program outcomes against learning, capacity building and social impact goals of the project and make recommendations for improvement, replication and scaling.
