Abstract
Using Camtasia, Dan Casmier created a basic animation that shows students how a molecule moves across a chromatography column – a difficult concept for students to visualize. To develop this animation, he decided what the animation should have in it, looked for CC BY images to use to reduce the need to create graphics, looked at what others had done, and decided the level of complexity needed to convey the concept. The animation developed shows from a theoretical point of view how molecules move through the gas chromatograph column and demonstrates that molecules move at different rates over the column. He provided a brief overview of Camtasia features he used in creating the animation as well.
Dan Casmier, chemistry faculty and natural sciences department chair, Great Falls College Montana State University, presented this information to faculty working on the Consortium for Healthcare Education Online project at the CHEO Discipline Panel Faculty Professional Development Workshop – By Design: Taking ALL Allied Health Students Across the Finish Line, on May 15, 2015. The event was hosted by the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) and was held at its SHEPC Learning Center in Boulder, CO. The CHEO project is funded by a U.S. Department of Labor Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) grant.
