Abstract

This is part of a collection of Computer Aided Design, CAD, exercises to support AutoDesk Fusion 360 instruction. License-free examples of designed parts and assemblies are a resource for instructors who can customize the presentation and design items to suit class needs. Presentations are delivered as MicroSoft PowerPoint’s “ppt” files. CAD files are delivered in Fusion 360’s “f3d” format. The value of the Fusion 360 files is that they contain the design steps or history when opened with Fusion 360. The exercises are useful in multiple industries, including art and engineering. In CNC machining, CAD projects require designing or revising one or a few parts to be made. The intent of an exercise is to learn the program’s tools and features. The strategy is to base the design on simpler, familiar objects in order to learn those tools. An object like a hand tool or gate hasp should be familiar, or less intimidating, to a beginning CAD student. Commercial tutorials tend to show more complex parts and assemblies to simultaneously show the capabilities of their product. Industry certification is more about knowing the use of a program tools, not design complexity. These exercises have a designation at the end of their name, BEG, MID, and END, indicating when they may be appropriate during the class term. A MID requires skills learned earlier in the class. An END designation would be for learning a Fusion tool that is not a key to machining needs, but would be part of AutoDesk CAD certification exam. “Direct Modeling” or “free-form” design modes would be more appropriate for art or industrial design. This exercise is a beginning CAD project for designing a fence Hasp. Hasp 2.
